When to Ask a Conservator About Painting Repair

A professional examination can help identify the cause of visible changes and the treatment your painting needs. Contact FACL about:

  • Cracking, flaking or lifting paint
  • Yellowed or discolored varnish and accumulated surface dirt
  • Water, smoke or mold damage
  • Tears, holes or punctures requiring canvas painting repair
  • Loose canvas or unstable stretcher bars

Painting conservation addresses the stability of the artwork as well as its appearance. Our conservators assess the paint, support and surface coatings before recommending oil painting restoration or cleaning.

From Evaluation to Painting Restoration

  1. Start with photos and a conversation.
Call or email photographs of the full painting and close-ups of the damage. Share its approximate size, history and any previous restoration you know about. Photos help us discuss the next steps; an examination may be needed to confirm treatment.
  2. Examine the artwork.
We assess the canvas or other support, paint layers and surface coatings under appropriate lighting and magnification.
  3. Review a written treatment proposal.
We explain the recommended conservation steps and associated costs so you can make an informed decision.
  4. Carry out treatment suited to the painting.
Depending on the examination, work may include painting cleaning, varnish removal, canvas repair, paint stabilization and retouching of losses.
  5. Review the completed work and care guidance.
We discuss the treatment with you and provide guidance for the painting’s continued preservation.

Meet the Experience Behind FACL

Scott M. Haskins, President and Head Conservator
Scott completed a three-year painting and mural conservation program in Italy in 1978 and has owned and operated FACL since 1986. His work includes paintings on canvas, paper and walls, with experience conserving historic and contemporary artworks.

Care guided by the individual artwork
Our team works with museums, private collectors and families. Treatment recommendations consider the original materials, the painting’s condition and your priorities. We explain the proposed work rather than applying a single repair method to every painting.

Painting Cleaning and Varnish Removal

Surface dirt, smoke residue or discolored varnish can obscure a painting’s colors and detail. FACL’s painting cleaning services begin with an assessment of the paint and surface coatings. Cleaning and varnish removal are considered according to the materials and condition of the individual artwork.

Cleaning may be part of a broader oil painting restoration treatment when a piece also needs canvas repair or paint stabilization. Learn more in How Are Paintings Cleaned? and discuss your painting with a conservator.

Planning Your Painting Restoration

How much does painting restoration cost?
The scope of treatment depends on the painting’s size, materials, condition and previous repairs. FACL provides a written treatment proposal with associated costs after assessing the work. Contact us with photographs to begin the conversation.

How long will the work take?
Discuss your timing needs with our team. The treatment required and the condition of the painting affect the schedule, so timing is considered for each project.
